architecture

The architecture work captures life through a new way of seeing.

Rather than observing and recording buildings in a conventional style, Richard considers how to photograph the essence of the subject and so reflect the creativity and the general ambience of the structure.

This section illustrates how the photograph requires careful thought with regards lighting and overall composition to produce a well-crafted result.

This project illustrates Richard’s adaptability in both Commercial Interior and Exterior work. Regards the latter, he aims to look at a ‘standard’ object and present it on a slightly more abstract format.

On the above subject and regards commissioned work, Richard is flexible to work in the style required by the client.

Richard enjoys finding shape and form in a building and photograph it in a more ‘macro’ way of seeing. Whilst maintaining the larger-scale photograph (the first image), his other shots look at more detail & single aspects of a building.

This work was commissioned by the Polymer & Plastics Engineering Department, Bradford University.

This work became the award-winning 2008 series of ‘Architecture & Interior’ photographs awarded by the Association of Photographers, London.

Richard particularly enjoys photographing architecture by night as he feels it ‘simplifies’ the subject, removing all extraneous daytime detail.

Here he wanted to show the development of the Liverpool Waterfront and Liverpool 1 (a retail and leisure city complex). Simplicity of the subject and its tone were keys in this series.

This series explores not just the building itself, but also the night-light surrounding it. There is an ambience hightened by the sky and so this is included within the photograph.

In addition, there is a demonstration of a more all-encompassing photograph (the first image, Peckham library). Additionally, in both this and the second images (Laban, dance centre) the tones recreate the original colours very accurately. Indeed, it is enjoyable to look at not just the building itself, but also the tones that supplement its form.

These three images were created on a panoramic camera. This format presents a very aesthetic way of viewing an architectural landscape. Indeed, it is the closest way the human eye sees.

Once again, there is a combination of both the ‘Commercial’ and the ‘Abstract’ image.

Having lived in Liverpool for the past 15 years and, particularly, following the completion of a new retail/office/accomodation centre (Liverpool One), Richard chose to record memories of the city centre (from both a professional and personal perspective). The project illustrate the economic progress of the city since Richard first arrived there. Some of the shots are shown here.
